Hot Low Price Companies To Watch In Right Now

Iran recently reached an agreement with world leaders to limit its nuclear program in exchange for lighter economic sanctions. In the wake of this deal, some pundits speculated that Iran’s nuclear deal could push oil prices down and threaten the US shale oil boom. If you are in investor in the energy sector — particularly if you are invested in oil producers — this is well worth a discussion of the potential implications.

Let’s review how oil prices came to be where they are today. It was just 15 years ago, in December 1998, that the price of West Texas Intermediate closed below $11/barrel. At that time there was a lot of spare oil production capacity that could be brought online in case of a disruption in an oil-exporting country, so there was little or no fear premium priced into oil.

At those low prices, oil producers weren’t investing a lot of money in new capacity, but global oil demand continued to grow. In 1998, global demand for oil was 74.3 million barrels per day (bpd). By 2012, demand had increased to 89.9 million bpd — an average annual increase over that time frame of 1.1 million bpd.

It is true that in the West — the US and Europe — oil consumption was pretty stagnant over that period of time. This has led to puzzlement for many over the steady upward march of oil prices over the past decade. The short answer is that the West isn’t the entire world. The developing world more than made up for what the West wasn’t consuming.

Advisors' Opinion:
  • [By Charles Sizemore]

ARCP has a shorter trading history than some of its peers, such as Realty Income (O) and National Retail Properties (NNN), which largely explains why its yield is higher. As a relatively new REIT, ARCP stock is largely unfollowed by investors. But once its merger with Cole Properties (COLE) is completed, ARCP will be the largest trip-net REIT by market cap and total square footage, and it will no longer be flying under Wall Street radar.

  • [By Bob Ciura]

However, despite headwinds in the past year due to rising rates, high-quality REITs likeHCP (NYSE: HCP  ) ,Health Care REIT (NYSE: HCN  ) , andRealty Income (NYSE: O  ) exhibit long-term visions for their business that should appeal greatly to Foolish investors.

  • [By Brad Thomas]

It seems that Mr. Market has seen the mispriced risk associated with MPW's differentiated higher risk value proposition. Simply said, it makes no sense to invest in a REIT that pays out a dividend yield of 5.3% when it's acquiring properties at 9%. In other words, I can buy shares in Realty Income (O) today ($47.73) and get a 4.7% dividend yield with much less risk.

    Is it safe?
Network and data-security expert Fortinet (NASDAQ: FTNT  ) also got a taste of what it means to come up short of expectations, as it pre-announced earnings that were well below analyst forecasts. It laid the blame on a handful of U.S. service providers, who failed to come through in closing deals, and noted that its telecom vertical market will amount to 25% of first-quarter revenue compared to 30% last year. Its stock plunged 13%, and dragged down much of the security sector with it, though by not nearly as much. Sourcefire was down less than 2%, Palo Alto Networkswas down 1%, and Check Point Softwarewas off less than 1%.
