Top Solar Stocks For 2014

At moments like these, the best I can do is pull out my best Keanu Reeves impersonation: Whoah.

Associated Press

The promise of an easy Fed sure has investors excited. The Dow Jones Industrial Average gained 421.28 points, or 2.4%, to 17.778.15 today, while the S&P 500 rose 2.4% to 4,748.40. Every stock in the Dow finished up today, with Microsoft (MSFT) and International Business Machines (IBM) and Goldman Sachs (GS) leading the way. Perhaps more frightening: By my count, just 21 S&P 500 stocks finished in the red today, as Oracle (ORCL) and First Solar (FSLR) led the benchmark higher.

It’s not just today’s gains, though they are impressive. Consider the two days the S&P 500 just had: It gained 4.5%, with the market up at least 2% on both days. The latter hasn’t happened since April 8, 2002–back when I was a 29-year old day trader not having to compete with those high-frequency guys.

Advisors' Opinion:
  • [By Tyler Crowe]

It probably isn't a coincidence that one of the top solar-powered states also happens to be one of the largest users of alternative-fueled vehicles, specifically electric. Of the 314 alternative fueling stations in Arizona, more than two-thirds of them are for electric vehicles, in part because of the gains in solar efficiency. First Solar's (NASDAQ: FSLR  ) recently acquired Macho Springs project in New Mexico will sell electricity to El Paso Electric for 5.79 cents per kilowatt-hour, less than half of El Paso's current coal power deals.Thesekind ofefficiencygains will be critical as solar tries to create a stronger foothold in the alternative-energy space.

  • [By Travis Hoium]

Solar tariffs in Europe started at a low 11% rate last week, but if a deal between Europe, China, and even the U.S. isn't reached by Aug. 6 then they could go up to as much as 68%. This is clearly a negative development for Chinese manufacturers like Yingli Green Energy (NYSE: YGE  ) , LDK Solar (NYSE: LDK  ) , and Trina Solar (NYSE: TSL  ) , but it's not necessarily good for U.S. companies either. First Solar (NASDAQ: FSLR  ) has little presence in Europe right now and SunPower (NASDAQ: SPWR  ) won't see much benefit from tariffs either. In the end, tariffs are bad for nearly everyone, a sentiment Travis Hoium covers in the video below.

  • [By Jake L'Ecuyer]

    Equities Trading UP
First Solar (NASDAQ: FSLR) shot up 9.67 percent to $55.17 after the company reported upbeat third-quarter results and lifted its full-year earnings forecast.

  • [By Paul Ausick]

Could this be the beginning of trend in the solar sector? First Solar Inc. (NASDAQ: FSLR) does not use silicon in its solar panels, so there is no chance that it will follow suit. Its recent acquisition of cadmium telluride (CdTe) intellectual property from General Electric Co. (NYSE: GE) gives it essentially total control over its technology.

  • [By Roberto Pedone]

EMCORE (EMKR), together with its subsidiaries, provides compound semiconductor-based products for the broadband, fiber optics, satellite, and solar power markets. This stock closed up 1% to $4.09 in Tuesday's trading session.

    Tuesday's Range: $4.00-$4.14
    52-Week Range: $3.50-$5.62
    Tuesday's Volume: 187,000
    Three-Month Average Volume: 103,744

From a technical perspective, EMKR trended modestly higher here back above its 50-day moving average of $4.03 with above-average volume. This stock has been making higher lows over the last three months each time it has pulled back, which is a bullish technical sign. This spike to the upside on Tuesday is starting to push shares of EMKR within range of triggering a big breakout trade. That trade will hit if EMRK manages to take out some key near-term overhead resistance levels at $4.16 to $4.20 and then above $4.22 with high volume.

Traders should now look for long-biased trades in EMKR as long as it's trending above some key near-term support levels at $3.90 to $3.86 or above more support at $3.78 and then once it sustains a move or close above those breakout levels with volume that hits near or above 103,744 shares. If that breakout gets underway soon, then EMKR will set up to re-test or possibly take out its next major overhead resistance levels at $4.53 to its 200-day moving average of $4.65, or even $5 to $5.30.

Advisors' Opinion:
  • [By Paul Ausick]

Provided that the Chinese government either encourages or permits consolidation, any of these three could be an acquirer. The likeliest target, of course, is SunTech Power Holdings Co. Ltd. (NYSE: STP), which is reorganizing and which the government has already seemed to give up on. Other possible targets include ReneSola Ltd. (NYSE: SOL) and JinkoSolar Holding Co. Ltd. (NYSE: JKS).

  • [By Wall Street Strategies]

Naturally the news is a big positive for the industry, with Chinese solar names like Yingli (YGE), Trina (TSL), Canadian Solar (CSIQ) -- which is actually Chinese despite its name -- JinkoSolar (JKS), JA Solar (JASO), and LDK Solar (LDK) each up more than 10% at midday. The Guggenheim Solar ETF (TAN), which tracks several global solar companies, was up 8%, breaking to a new 52-week high.

  • [By Aaron Levitt]

And already, the price rise is beginning to take shape. According to its latest report, GTM shows that Chinese solar producers like JinkoSolar (JKS) have priced their modules at 80 to 85 cents per watt for new deliveries. That compares to just to 70 cents per watt at the end of 2013.

The exact roll methodology differs between certain commodities. The Index will reflect the performance of its underlying commodities, including roll costs, without regard to income earned on cash positions. The Dow Jones-UBS is consisted of eight different commodity sectors, such as petroleum, natural gas, livestock, grains, industrial metals, precious metals, softs and vegetable oils. These eight sectors track futures contracts prices of 19 specific commodities, such as natural gas, crude oil, unleaded gasoline, heating oil, live cattle, lean hogs, wheat, corn, soybeans, soybean oil, aluminum, copper, zinc, nickel, gold, silver, sugar, cotton and coffee. The Dow Jones-UBS is consisted of commodities traded on the United States exchanges, with the exception of aluminum, nickel and zinc, which trade on the London Metal Exchange.

Today, the yen carry trade, as represented by the ProShares UltraShort Yen (YCS) , is collapsing below both its lower Bollinger Band and its 50-day moving average the most significant downtrend initiation since June. The scramble to cover positions funded by yen carry trades is why the selling is so frantic.

The ProShares UltrasShort Euro ETF (EUO) has gained 1.3% to $16.77, while the ProShares UltraShort Yen (YCS) has gained 1.9% to $66.58.

  • [By Matthew McCall]

An ETF that takes advantage of a weak yen is the ProShares UltraShort Yen ETF (NYSE: YCS). The ETF returns two times the daily inverse of the value of the yen. For example, if the yen declines by 0.5 percent, theoretically YCS should be up 1.0 percent and vice versa. The leveraged aspect of the ETF makes it too risky for most investors and it should only be considered a short-term trading vehicle.

Advisors' Opinion:
  • [By Ben Levisohn]

And what’s good for Carnival should also be good for Royal Caribbean Cruises (RCL), which also got an upgrade, Norwegian Cruise Line Holdings(NCLH), which Farley and Kocharyan label their top pick. They explain:

  • [By Patricio Kehoe] Carnival Corporation (CCL) for a package deal, since these two companies control 75% of the global cruise market. But let see what it is about Carnival Corporation that has caught investment guru John Hussman (Trades, Portfolio) attention enough to add more of this company shares to his portfolio.

    Cruising All over the World

As the world largest global cruise company, Carnival Corporation owns over 100 ships and operates 10 brands worldwide, which attract an anual customer base of10 million. This extensive portfolio includes among others the Carnival Cruise Lines, Princess Cruises and Seabourn in North America; AIDA in Germany, Costa Cruises in Southern Europe, and the P&O Cruises in both Australia and the UK. This firm also owns the tour company Holland America Princess Alaska Tours, which operates in Alaska and the Canadian Yukon. However, it the company 200,000 passenger ship capacity that has allowed it to reach a diverse group of consumers in a lightly penetrated vacation segment, earning it $15.5 billion in revenue.

The global cruise market is a largely untapped industry, an aspect that Carnival Cruise benefits from greatly. With the 65 and older demographic growing at a 36% rate between 2010 and 2020, while the cruise industry capacity grows at 3%, baby boomers looking to retire and spend their money on leisure will surely be swooped-up by this industry giant. In fact, the company long-term business model is focused on international expansion, especially in the Asian continent. In 2013, for example, the firm opened its second office and launched a home port in Japan, in addition to other office openings in China (5), South Korea (1), Taiwan (1), Hong Kong (1) and Singapore (1). The larger international presence, combined with an improving economic environment and increasing cost leverage, should help boost operating margin from its current 10.70%.

There are definitely concerns for Phillip Morris, which include decreased market share in many areas and poor debt management. However, up until this point, Phillip Morris has done a good job rewarding its shareholders. While history usually repeats itself, that not necessarily an all-positive in this case. Phillip Morris didn hold up well in 2008/early 2009. If a similar environment were to present itself again, then Phillip Morris wouldn be a top option regardless of the impressive yield. Best Rising Companies To Buy For 2014

DELAFIELD, Wis. (Stockpickr) -- Professional traders running mutual funds and hedge funds don't just look at a stock's price moves; they also track big changes in volume activity. Often when above-average volume moves into an equity, it precedes a large spike in volatility.

>>Warren Buffett's Top 25 Stocks for 2014

Major moves in volume can signal unusual activity, such as insider buying or selling -- or buying or selling by "superinvestors."
/p>

Unusual volume can also be a major signal that hedge funds and momentum traders are piling into a stock ahead of a catalyst. These types of traders like to get in well before a large spike, so it's always a smart move to monitor unusual volume. That said, remember to combine trend and price action with unusual volume. Put them all together to help you decipher the next big trend for any stock.

>>5 Stocks Insiders Love Right Nowㄢ

With that in mind, let's take a look at several stocks rising on unusual volume recently.

Advisors' Opinion:
  • [By Roberto Pedone]

Another under-$10 stock that's starting to move within range of triggering a big breakout trade is Fuel-Tech (FTEK), which uses a suite of advanced technologies to provide boiler optimization, efficiency improvement and air pollution reduction and control solutions to utility and industrial customers. This stock is off to a slow start in 2013, with shares up just 7% so far.

If you take a look at the chart for Fuel Tech, you'll notice that this stock has entered a tight consolidation chart pattern over the last month, with shares moving between $4.19 on the downside and $4.78 a share on the upside. Shares of FTEK are now starting to trend higher and move within range of triggering a big breakout trade above the upper-end of its recent sideways trading chart pattern.

Market players should now look for long-biased trades in FTEK if it manages to break out above some near-term overhead resistance levels at $4.66 to $4.68 a share and then once it takes out more resistance at $4.78 to its 52-week high at $5.20 a share with high volume. Look for a sustained move or close above those levels with volume that hits near or above its three-month average action of 77,549 shares. If that breakout hits soon, then FTEK will set up to enter new 52-week high territory, which is bullish technical price action. Some possible upside targets of that breakout are $5.50 to $6, or even $7 a share.

Traders can look to buy FTEK off weakness to anticipate that breakout and simply use a stop that sits right below its 50-day at $4.33 a share, or just below its 200-day at $4.14 a share. One can also buy FTEK off strength once it clears those breakout levels with volume and then simply use a stop that sits a comfortable percentage from your entry point.

The merger between the two companies had been in the works since September, but hit many a bump on the road. The two major obstacles in the path were the Chinese regulations and the ongoing tax investigation regarding Nokia Indian plant, operating in Chennai. While China green-lighted the deal easily, the Indian authorities were less obliging. The end result is that the Indian facility was not a part of the acquisitions and will be retained by Nokia. Although Nokia has not announced any conclusive plans, the fact that it offered its 7500+ Indian workers early retirement scheme suggests that the plant may soon be shut down. Also, noticeably absent from the terms of the merger was the tate of the artSouth Korean plant in Masan. The deal closed for $7.5 billion. As previously decided, Nokia former CEO Stephen Elop will be reporting to Microsoft CEO, Satya Nadella and will be appointed executive vice president of Microsoft Devices Group. He will be overseeing the division that, from hence on, will be in charge of expanding the business of Lumia smartphones and tablets, Xbox hardware, Perceptive Pixel (PPI) products and accessories. Microsoft also plans to export more than 25,000 of Nokia former 90,000 employees. What does it mean for Microsoft future?

Finally, on the government side, protecting financial assets will again be a factor - but so will safeguarding daily operations that keep a country's citizens safe. That's why homeland cybersecurity spending by governments around the world is expected to increase to more than $2 trillion a year by 2022. This will benefit companies like defense contractor Northrop Grumman Corp. (NYSE: NOC), who, along with Italian firm Finmeccanica, signed a massive contract with NATO to provide cybersecurity for NATO's network across 50 sites and 28 member countries. Companies like Northrop will continue to profit as international governments boost cyber networks and can provide the strategic intelligence to help nations expand their cyber defense against the new threats of the 21st century.

It's now spreading within the United States, which is a whole different ball game than preventing it from getting to the United States. This presents a real risk of pandemic spreading within our borders. PositiveID can help.

BlackBerry (NASDAQ: BBRY  ) , the Ontario-based smartphone maker, revolutionized the market by introducing the concept of on-the-go-mail. In recent years, it has lost business to Apple's iPhone and Google'sAndroid devices. As smartphone sales shriveled, BlackBerry reported a loss of $4.4 billion in the last quarter. The company tried to sell itself, but there were no takers.

As my colleague Steve Symington recently pointed out, BlackBerry (NASDAQ: BBRY  ) has already begun to cut the price of its Z10 touchscreen smartphone at AT&Tand Verizon (NYSE: VZ  ) , just a few months after its U.S. launch. The Z10 price has dropped from $199, to $99, at both carriers, and it can even be found for less at some other retailers. BlackBerry has portrayed these price cuts as a normal part of the device life cycle, but they are a pretty clear indication that Z10 demand is weak.
