5 Best Regional Bank Stocks For 2014

As bank investors, it's easy to get focused on the big banks. They make a lot of noise and are regularly in the news: more than occasionally for the wrong reasons. But we focus on the giants and ignore the regionals at our own investing peril.

The best regional banks can take serious financial power and investment finesse and turn it into share-price appreciation without the annoying drama and potentially dangerous hubris of the too-big-to-fail institutions. PNC Financial (NYSE: PNC  ) is one of these low-drama, high-power banks. Here are three reasons to buy stock in this Pittsburgh-based powerhouse right now.

1. Big-bank beating first-quarter earnings
For the first quarter of 2013, PNC reported net income of $1.0 billion. For the first quarter of 2012, PNC's net income was $811 million. That makes for an increase of 23.3%. Wells Fargo (NYSE: WFC  ) came close to but couldn't quite match PNC's performance, with net-income growth of 22% year over year.

    Calling all cash flows
When you are trying to buy the market's best stocks, it's worth checking up on your companies' free cash flow once a quarter or so, to see whether it bears any relationship to the net income in the headlines. That's what we do with this series. Today, we're checking in on Altisource Portfolio Solutions (Nasdaq: ASPS  ) , whose recent revenue and earnings are plotted below.

While these companies are still heavily involved, there is also a new presence on the scene: the single-family home REIT. Last December, mortgage REIT Two Harbors (NYSE: TWO  ) spun off Silver Bay Realty (NYSE: SBY  ) after selling its stable of 3,100 homes to Silver Bay prior to its initial public offering. Around the same time, Altisource Residentialwas also born, spun off from Altisource Portfolio Solutions (NASDAQ: ASPS  ) .

There's no foolproof way to know the future for Altisource Portfolio Solutions (Nasdaq: ASPS  ) or any other company. However, certain clues may help you see potential stumbles before they happen -- and before your stock craters as a result.

  • [By Amanda Alix]

For Wall Street types, single-family foreclosures can be bought cheaply and in bulk, then fixed up and rented. Companies like the Blackstone Group (NYSE: BX  ) and Colony Financial (NYSE: CLNY  ) have been very active in this market, with the former purchasing 16,000 homes just last year, and the latter ramping up its own portfolio to approximately 7,000. This new industry has also spawned fresh entrants from the REIT field, Silver Bay Realty (NYSE: SBY  ) and Altisource Residential, (NYSE: RESI  ) two trusts that were spun off earlier this year from parent companies Two Harbors Investment (NYSE: TWO  ) and Altisource Portfolio Solutions (NASDAQ: ASPS  ) , specifically to take advantage of the boom in the foreclosure-to-rental market.

Wireless Towers Are the Golden Ticket for Your Investment

With smartphones now representing over 60% of U.S. handsets, increased data usage is leading to a growing demand for spectrum, which is a key component in carriers' race over market share. Thus, as an operator of wireless tower communications sites, Crown Castle International Inc. (CCI) will enjoy the benefits of being in the right place at the right time.

As a matter of fact, the company is the second largest independent operator of wireless tower communication sites in the U.S. and it is the leading tower owner, with roughly 40,000 sites domestically and over 1,700 in Australia.

The firm leases and licenses antenna spaces on its controlled towers to major wireless carriers such as AT&T Inc. (T), Sprint Nextel Corporation (S) and Verizon Communications Inc. (VZ). Moreover, it leases access to its distributed antenna systems for the transmission of wireless signals related to the transmission of voice, video and data.

Long Lasting Upsides with Low Risk

Crown Castle has many advantages running to its favor, which have carved the company a narrow economic moat. For one, it boasts great visibility stemming from the fact that its long term contracts have enabled the firm to have more than 97% of its coming year's revenue projections already assured.

Secondly, high switching costs make it unlikely for carriers to switch towers, since the costs of such a move would by far exceed the savings from changing to another operator. In addition, zoning regulations hinder carriers to do so. Third, its economies of scale allow the company great cost advantages that result in massive operating leverage.

And lastly, there is the upside of the network effect. Since each tower covers a specific area, multiple carriers will be willing to have presence in the same towers, given this is directly connected to their ability to compete over market share in the areas covered by each site.

Creating Shareholder Value

In early January 2014, Crown Castle began operating as a real estate investment trust. Upon the announcement of this decision, chief executive Ben Moreland stated that this conversion should "lower our weighed average cost of capital and provide additional opportunities for creating long-term shareholder value." In fact, REITs have to pay 90% of its taxable income to shareholders in the form of dividends every year.

A Solid Growth Projection

Immense growth in mobile Internet traffic compels carriers to improve their coverage and network quality in order to achieve a better transmission. Hence, carriers need more tower space. Consequently, increasing occupancy of space at the existing towers has become the company's main top-line growth driver.

In fourth quarter of fiscal 2014, site rental reported a 14% revenue growth, which encouraged the firm to raise its guidance for full 2014. Price escalations of 3% to 5% are another revenue booster.

Moreover, margin expansion is expected to accelerate in the coming years as its fixed costs spread over a growing number of tenants per tower. On the other hand, high switching costs benefit the company with recurring revenues, which create reliability in relation to its ability to generate cash flow, thereby increasing its access to credit financing.

Valuation

Crown Castle stock trades at a premium of 263.00 its trailing earnings compared to the industry median of 19.0. This high multiple reflects the increasing demand for this share, based on the projection of sturdy earnings growth in the future.

1395885423452.png

Its revenues are in a steady upswing, with a robust 15.5% growth compared to its peers' average of 3.30%. Investment guru Steve Mandel (Trades, Portfolio) continues to increase its holdings in the company, backing my strong feeling about the firm's unstoppable growth trajectory.

Disclosure: Victor Selva holds no position in any stocks mentioned.

Winter hits housing recovery

new home sales 032514

Home prices fell in January, but held up better in many warm-weather markets.

NEW YORK (CNNMoney) Cold weather hurt home prices in January, as a closely watched measure of housing values posted its third straight monthly decline.

The S&P/Case-Shiller index of prices in 20 major markets dipped 0.1%.

"The housing recovery may have taken a breather due to the cold weather," said David Blitzer, chairman of the index committee at S&P Dow Jones Indices.

Five cities bucked the trend and saw price gains of 0.4% or more, and all of them -- Las Vegas, Miami, San Diego, San Francisco and Tampa -- are in warm-weather states. Four of the five cities that posted the sharpest drop in prices were cities hit hard by the cold weather -- Chicago, Detroit, Minneapolis and Boston. Seattle prices also saw a significant drop.

Home prices are still bouncing back from the bust. On a year-over-year basis, prices gained 13.2% nationally. But gains are slowing; January's annual rise is the lowest 12-month gain posted since August. The high point of the current recovery, the 13.7% increase in November, was generally seen an unsustainable by housing experts.

Home values over the last year have been helped by a drop in foreclosures, a decline in the unemployment rate and a relatively tight supply of homes available for sale in the face of pent-up demand from buyers. But beyond the cold weather, prices are facing a headwind of higher mortgage rates. Rates are up from a year ago, when they hit a record low.

Also on Tuesday, the Census Department reported that the pace of new home sales in February fell 3% from January, and also dipped below year-ago levels. January's estimate was also revised lower.

The Northeast suffered by far the biggest decline in new home sales, falling more than 30% from to both January and year-earlier levels, indicating that they were also hurt by the bad weather. To top of page

Tesla VP: 'Several bases' to sue over NJ decision

Tesla Motors has "probably several bases to sue" to overturn a commission's ruling last week that will prevent the electric-car maker from selling vehicles direct to the public in New Jersey, a Tesla vice president says.

Tesla is "still studying what our options are" to challenge the ruling of the state Motor Vehicle Commission, says Diarmuid O'Connell, who is charge of business development. As for CEO Elon Musk's cryptic mention last week of "judicial remedies" in a blog post about the case, O'Connell says "there appear to be some paths forward on that front."

Tesla had two showrooms for selling its electric luxury cars direct to the public in New Jersey. But the commission ruled that vehicles must be sold through dealers, not by manufacturers. Musk shot back, saying a blog post that the Christie administration had made a backroom deal with the dealers.

O'Connell, in an interview with USA TODAY, insists that Tesla "was operating in good faith from the beginning." While he's careful to point out that he's not a lawyer, he says "I would assume there would have to be a legal basis for changing that regulation."

New Jersey is not the only state where Tesla is fighting to stick with its business model.

In New York, a bill in the Legislature is also aimed at stopping Tesla. He says the bill is only the latest attempt, following two efforts in court in a state where Tesla has five showrooms and four service centers.

Ohio is another battleground, where dealers are moving to limit Tesla's operations, according to O'Connell. But "we are committed to sustaining growth there."

Then there is Texas, where Tesla has been barred under its current dealer-less mode. The state is a finalist for Tesla's giant battery plant. O'Connell dangles the possiblity that allowing the automaker to sell there could help the Lone Star State's chances. "Our business interests are, to a degree, (influenced) by where we sell cars," O'Connell says. He adds that there aren't "explicit ties" between! the decision on the factory location and where its cars are sold, but Texas certainly wouldn't hurt is chances for the plant by letting sales go forward.

Tesla's crusade to cut out the middlemen when it comes to selling cars is critical, he says. "We wouldn't be arguing and fighting...if we didn't feel it was direct to our mission," he says.

3 Obamacare Terms to Know Before March 31st

With the open enrollment period for the Affordable Care Act, better known as Obamacare, almost over, there is still widespread uncertainty about the law and precisely what it does. This uncertainty is particularly true for the previously uninsured, many of whom are now dealing with a complicated set of insurance terms they have never previously encountered. With the individual mandate set to penalize those who do not sign up for Obamacare insurance by March 31st, this is a key time to learn everything you can about this transformative law. In this video, health care analysts David Williamson and Michael Douglass explain the three key terms investors and consumers should know about Obamacare: the metal plans, the individual mandate, and the so-called "death spiral."

Metal plans help consumers understand the so-called actuarial value of their plan, or what percentage of essential health benefits their plan covers. The lowest actuarial value plans are bronze, followed by silver, gold, and platinum. The death spiral refers to the fear that the final insurance pool for 2014 may be less healthy than insurers had anticipated, causing them to lose money and thereby raise premiums next year. Michael and David consider the two main issues with the death spiral argument. The individual mandate, or the law's requirement that all individuals get insurance or face tax penalties, has consistently been the least popular aspect of Obamacare, but hospitals, including large for-profit operators Tenet Healthcare (NYSE: THC  ) and HCA Holdings (NYSE: HCA  ) , are poised to benefit. See the video to find out why.

    Tuesday's Range: $3.40-$3.58

    52-Week Range: $1.42-$3.74

    Tuesday's Volume: 106,000

    Three-Month Average Volume: 74,659

From a technical perspective, RWC trended higher here right above some near-term support levels at $3.20 to $3.10 with above-average volume. This stock has been uptrending for the last two months, with shares moving higher from its low of $2.62 to its intraday high of $3.58. During that move, shares of RWC have been making mostly higher lows and higher highs, which is bullish technical price action. That move is quickly pushing shares of RWC within range of triggering a major breakout trade. That trade will hit if RWC manages to take out its 52-week high at $3.74 with high volume.

Traders should now look for long-biased trades in RWC as long as it's trending above some near-term support levels at $3.20 or its 50-day at $3.10 and then once it sustains a move or close above $3.74 with volume that hits near or above 74,659 shares. If that breakout hits soon, then RWC will set up to enter new 52-week-high territory, which is bullish technical price action. Some possible upside targets off that breakout are $4.50 to $5.

Hot Defense Companies To Watch For 2014: Implant Sciences Corp (IMSC.PK)

Implant Sciences Corporation (Implant Sciences), incorporated in August 31,1984, develops, manufactures and sells sensors and systems for the security, safety and defense (SS&D) industries. Its technologies are used worldwide in security and inspection applications. Implant Sciences has developed technologies used in explosives trace detection (ETD), and and narcotics trace detection (NTD) applications and market and sell handheld ETD and benchtop ETD and NTD systems that use its technologies. The systems are used by private companies and Government agencies to screen baggage, cargo, vehicles, other objects and people for the detection of trace amounts of explosives. Implant Sciences have developed explosives detection systems designed for use in aviation and transportation security, high threat facilities and infrastructure, military installations, customs and border protection, and mail and cargo screening. The systems use the Quantum Sniffer technologies, including photon-based, non-radioactive ion source in combination with ion mobility spectrometry, a detection tool sensitive to the speeds with which ions of various substances move through the air to electronically detect minute quantities of explosives vapor and particles.

Quantum Sniffer QS-H150 Portable Explosives Detector

The Quantum Sniffer QS-H150 Portable Explosives Detector employs a vortex collector for the simultaneous detection of explosives particulates and vapors with or without physical contact and in real-time. The QS-HS150 can detect vapors and nanogram quantities of explosives particulates for explosives substances considered to be threats. The substances include military and commercial explosives, improvised and homemade explosives, and propellants and taggants.

The QS-H150 has automatic and continuous self-calibration. It monitors its environment, senses changes that would affect its accuracy, and re-calibrates accordingly. The system requires no user intervention and no calibration cons! umables. The detection process begins with the collection of a sample with its vortex collector. After collection, the sample is ionized photonically and analyzed using ion mobility spectrometer (IMS) technology. The presence of a threat substance is indicated by a visible and audible alarms. The threat substance is then identified and displayed on the integrated liquid crystal display (LCD) screen. When detecting a threat substance, the QS-H150 rapidly alarms. This real-time detection limits equipment contamination and allows for fast clear-down.

Quantum Sniffer QS-B220 Benchtop Explosives and Narcotics Detector

QS-B220 Benchtop Explosives and Narcotics Detector uses dual IMS with non-radioactive ionization for the detection and identification of a range of military, commercial, and improvised explosives as well as narcotics. The QS-B220 uses a sample trap which is wiped on the surface to be interrogated for explosives or narcotics particles.

The QS-B220 has automatic and continuous self-calibration. It monitors its environment, senses changes that would affect its accuracy, and re-calibrates accordingly.

Quantum Sniffer TM QS-Hx Portable Explosives Detector

The Company is focusing in developing a next-generation handheld detector that will use dual IMS non-radioactive ionization for the detection and identification of a range of military, commercial and improvised explosives, as well as narcotics. The QS-Hx will have automatic and continuous self-calibration, multi-level password-protected data security and will include a data management interface with data export to a network for recordkeeping, providing a link with the central command centers and logistics systems used by carriers.

Miniature Mass Spectrometer

The Company acquisition of Ion Metrics enabled it to obtain miniaturized quadrupole mass spectrometry (QMS) detector technology. The QMS detector is roughly the size of an AA battery and has low manufactur! ing costs! . When used in conjunction with an IMS, the QMS detector senses the molecular weight of the chemical species resulting in an orthogonal detection method in which a more fundamental characteristic of a substance is measured. It is developing interfaces for integrating the QMS detector into its future products.

Hyphenated Detectors

Depending on the application and the number of interfering background chemicals, it may be necessary to incorporate additional orthogonal detection methods. The combination of multiple sensors in series is known as employing hyphenated methods. By measuring different properties of the same species, interferents are separated from target species for a deterministic detection and identification and have minimum rates of false alarms. It is developing hyphenated systems employing conventional ion mobility, differential mobility and quadrupole mass spectrometry. As of June 30, 2012, it has one patent issued in real-time trace detection by IMS and QMS and two hyphenated system patents pending.

The Company competes with Morpho Detection, Inc., NucTech Company Limited and Smiths Detection, Inc.

Currently, three main companies supply security equipment to the TSA - Safran (SAFRY.PK), Smiths (SMGKF.PK), and Level-3 Holdings (LLL). All three of these companies sell the whole range of their products to the TSA, with an ETD offering included. Recently, however, a new company, Implant Sciences Corporation (IMSC.PK) received approval from the TSA to begin selling their ETD equipment to airport security professionals. This approval has opened the door for IMSC to begin taking some market share away from the more established players in the US and beyond.

The Department of Defense awarded a round dozen defense contracts Friday, worth just under $7.2 billion in aggregate. The bulk of the contracts -- $7 billion worth -- were split among eight small privately held firms scattered around New Jersey, Maryland, Indiana, and Virginia contracted to supply software and systems engineering services in support of the Army's Software Engineering Center. But a handful of better-known -- and, more importantly to investors, publicly traded -- companies won contracts as well. Namely:

Petrobras’ Pasts Mistakes and Current Outlook Facing Years to Come

Best Tech Stocks To Invest In 2014

Petroleo Brasileiro (PBR), headquartered in Rio de Janeiro Brazil, was founded in 1953 and remained as a legal oil monopoly for the country until 1997. It is the largest company in the Southern Hemisphere by market capitalization and the largest in Latin America measured by 2011 revenues. The company owns oil refineries, oil tankers, is a major distributor for oil products and a leader in developing technology for deepwater and ultra deepwater oil production.

In 2010, the company conducted the largest share sale in its history, selling over $72.8 billion shares. The stock was sold in the BM&F Bovespa stock exchange market, becoming the fourth largest company in the world by market capitalization.

Though the company has been in decline in the last few years, it has recently launched a plan to reduce costs by $8 billion per year in the next four years. However, this being an election year, it is possible that the government won't want to update domestic prices to international ones, thus causing huge losses for the company.

Petroleo Brasileiro SA Petrobras ADR Profitability Analysis

Looking at profitability is a very important step in understanding a company. Profitability is –essentially – the reason behind a company's existence, and a key component in deciding whether to invest in or maintain your investment in a company. In this article I will look at Petroleo Brasileiro SA Petrobras ADR (PBR)'s earnings and earnings growth, profit margins, profitability ratios and cash flow. In addition, I will evaluate which institutional investors bought the stock in the recent quarters.

If you go back through the history of the stock market, there is a recurring theme among those stocks which have had some of the strongest price appreciation, and it's related to their earnings growth. If you plot a chart of earnings growth versus a company's stock price there is usually a strong relationship between the two of them. So, the first step when analyzing Petroleo Brasileiro SA Petrobras ADR is evaluating its earnings potential.

The company generated -15% EPS growth last quarter compared to the same quarter in the past year.

I am looking for growth stocks that generate more than 15% quarterly EPS growth. It is essential to evaluate why Petroleo Brasileiro SA Petrobras ADR generated less than that.

Sell-side analysts just upgraded EPS projections for the company, increasing EPS estimates by -46.16% for the current year.

I also look at the three-year annual average EPS growth rate to get a perspective on how the company grew in the recent years. PBR generated -21.69% annualized average EPS growth in the past three years.

I do not like that Petroleo Brasileiro SA Petrobras ADR grew less than 15% per year in the past three years. Fifteen percent is the minimum annual growth level I am looking for when investing in growth stocks. This fact does not prevent me from potentially investing in PBR, but it is certainly a warning sign that cannot be ignored.

A key step in analyzing Petroleo Brasileiro SA Petrobras ADR is studying how sales grew in the recent quarters or years. Why is this important? Well, revenue growth cannot be masked with accounting tricks or via cost-cutting strategies. This metric tells you in simple terms how demanded a company´s products or services are.

The company reported a 16% quarterly revenue growth year over year.

PBR generated strong quarterly growth levels. I am confident on Petroleo Brasileiro SA Petrobras ADR´s continued success in emerging economies.

I find the fact that revenues grew more than earnings per share very encouraging. This is a very important ratio because both sales and earnings must grow at same levels. If a company generates strong EPS growth levels and even stronger revenue growth levels, I tend to feel very bullish about it. Petroleo Brasileiro SA Petrobras ADR generated quarterly EPS growth of -15%, while sales grew by 16%.

It is important to watch beyond quarterly earnings, which are more short-term oriented. It is also crucial to pay attention to how annual sales grew in the past three years. Petroleo Brasileiro SA Petrobras ADR reported an average annual sales growth of 16.19% over the past three years over the minimum of 15% I am looking for in these kind of stocks.

The gross profit margin is a measure of a company's manufacturing and distribution efficiency during the production process. It tells an investor the percentage of revenue/sales left after subtracting the cost of the goods/services sold. Investors tend to pay more for businesses that have higher efficiency ratings, as these should be able to make a decent profit as long as overhead costs are controlled (overhead refers to rent, utilities, etc.).

Reviewing PBR's gross margin over the past five years, an investor can see that the company's gross margin has been decreasing. In fact, the 5-year low for the gross margin was reported at 25.4%. The 5-year high for this ratio was achieved over the past twelve months, when the margin reached 44.5%. However, the TTM gross profit margin of 23.9% is below the five-year average of 36.22%.

A gross margin below the five-year average implies that management has not been efficient in improving this key profitability metric.

Operating Margin = Operating Income / Total Sales

The operating margin is a measure of the proportion of a company's revenue that is left over after paying for variable costs of production, such as wages, raw materials, etc. A healthy operating margin is required for a company to be able to pay for its fixed costs such as interest on debt. If a company's margin is increasing, it is earning more per dollar of sales.

Over the past five years, the operating margin of Petroleo Brasileiro SA Petrobras ADR has been increasing. In 2009, the company reported an operating margin of 21.4%. Over the past twelve months the margin reached 10.6%.

The TTM operating margin of 10.6% is above the five-year average of 8.04%. I am always looking for companies that have improving operating margin trends.

Net Profit Margin = Net Income / Total Sales

A ratio of profitability calculated as net income divided by revenue, or net profits divided by sales. It measures how much out of every dollar of sales a company actually keeps in earnings.

The profit margin is a very useful metric when comparing companies in the same –or similar- industries. A higher profit margin indicates a more profitable company that has better control over its costs compared to its competitors. Profit margin is displayed as a percentage.

Over the past five years, PBR's net profit margin shrank, compared to the five-year average. The TTM net profit margin of 8.55% is below the five-year average of 12.71%. This implies that there has been a decline in the percentage of earnings that the company is able to keep compared to the company's five-year average.

I think it is important to look for stock with current net profit margins above the five year average margin. Basically, almost all my stock market winners were companies with above-average margins.

ROA - Return on Assets = Net Income / Total Assets

ROA is an indicator of how profitable a company is relative to its total assets. ROA gives an idea as to how efficient management is at using its assets to generate earnings. Calculated by dividing a company's net income by its total assets, ROA is displayed as a percentage. Sometimes this is referred to as "return on investment."

The 2012 ROA of Petroleo Brasileiro SA Petrobras ADR 3.68% is below the five-year average of 7.08%. This implies that the management has lessened its ability to use the company's assets to generate earnings over the past five years.

Free Cash Flow = Operating Cash Flow - Capital Expenditure

A measure of financial performance calculated as operating cash flow minus capital expenditures. Free cash flow (FCF) represents the cash that a company is able to generate after laying out the money required to maintain or expand its asset base. Free cash flow is important because it allows a company to pursue opportunities that enhance shareholder value. Without cash, it's tough to develop new products, make acquisitions, pay dividends and reduce debt.

Petroleo Brasileiro SA Petrobras ADR generated a ratio of cash flow from operations/total sales of (OCFS). The higher the percentage, the more cash available from sales.

If a company is generating a negative cash flow, it shows up as a negative number in the numerator in the cash flow margin equation. This means that even though the company can generate revenue, it is losing money.

I feel encouraged by the fact that Paul Tudor Jones (Trades, Portfolio) and Ray Dalio (Trades, Portfolio) bought the stock in the past months at an average price of $15.62. This shows that hedge funds have confidence in the stock.

Analyst Outlook

Currently, many analysts have a good outlook for PBR. Analysts at MSN money are predicting that PBR will retrieve EPS of $1.67 for FY 2013 and an EPS of $2.29 for FY 2014. Analysts at Bloomberg estimate (C1F)'s revenue to reach $144.89 billion for FY 2013 and $146.24 billion for FY 2014.

Conclusion

Though Brazilian government owns and will own a controlling portion of the company (by law). And they're upfront about it with shareholders: They often say that they will sometimes pursue their political agenda throughout the company, putting shareholders interests in second place. But, this wouldn't be always a bad thing as long as shareholders keep a close look on the current administration policies.

The recent discovery of gas and, primarily, oil under a salt layer puts the company on top of the world oil market, since it provides an uninterrupted source of oil for the next 10 years. This should be a good sign as long as the government and company's CEO Maria das Gracas Silva Foster come to an arrangement in terms of exploration, exploitation and pricing over this new discovery.

On the good side, the company's new CEO Foster, was honest and upfront about past mistakes and is committed with taking the company up again and lowering production costs. Also, the stock price is near a five-year low of $10.37, which provides an interesting entry point, especially after the new discovery of oil and gas resources.
