Shares of the medical device maker have surged by more than 30% in the past six months alone, rising higher despite the company's troubles. Sales have fallen into a slump at Boston Scientific, led lower by the company's cardiac rhythm management, or CRM, business, which produces everything from pacemakers to implantable defibrillators. This is an industry on the decline�--�Medtronic (NYSE: MDT ) , a leader in the medical device field, has seen its own CRM sales slump in recent quarters, while Boston Sci rival St. Jude Medical (NYSE: STJ ) has similarly had its top line hammered by its CRM division's falling revenue.

St. Jude Medical (NYSE: STJ ) has been under fire recently from sales losses in its cardiology divisions, but renal denervation could be a life-saver for this beleaguered company. The firm earned CE Mark approval for its EnligHTN renal denervation system back in 2012, and it launched a clinical study in February to study the system's benefits in preventing conditions such as heart attack or stroke. The EnligHTN isn't approved in the U.S. yet, but St. Jude's European approval puts this company on the fast track to becoming a major player in renal denervation.

Finally, implantable cardiovascular device maker St. Jude Medical (NYSE: STJ ) jumped 5.2% after reporting better-than-expected second-quarter results. Although second-quarter revenue fell by less than 1%, to $1.4 billion, from the year-ago period, it was enough to surpass the $1.36 billion analysts expected. Furthermore, St. Jude forecast EPS for the full-year of $3.70-$3.73, as compared to the Street's expectation of just $3.68. While I do see the benefits of owning a company like St. Jude as baby boomers age, I remain a bit concerned about the affect the medical device excise tax and Obamacare as a whole may have on a company like St. Jude in the near term.

What is surprising to 24/7 Wall St. is that the reaction was not worse elsewhere in the MLP sector. Most of the high-yield (distributions rather than dividends) MLPs held up well. One exception is El Paso Pipeline Partners, L.P. (NYSE: EPB) – in natural gas pipelines and terminaling – that was hit in sympathy with Boardwalk. Its units were down 2.6% to $30.74, and El Paso’s adjusted 52-week range is now $30.68 to $44.99 as they hit a new 52-week low on Monday. Its volume of almost 1.4 million units compared to an average volume of 861,000 units. El Paso’s market cap is $6.7 billion even after the drop and even at 52-week lows. Its distribution yield-equivalent screens out at 8.2%.

The price of Credit-Default Swaps (CDS) used to insure US government debt against the possibility of default climbed to 35.5 basis points Wednesday. That was the highest level in six months, and up from 32 basis points on Friday, September 27. But that level is still well below the 62 basis points it cost to insure US government debt against default at the time of last debt ceiling battle, in the summer of 2011. That was the highest level since the global financial crisis. (What this means is that an investor would pay 62,000 euros a year to insure 10 million euros of US Treasuries against a default in the next five years. The contract is denominated in euros to offset the impact of a default on the US dollar.) This insurance is getting more popular too, with these CDS contracts ranking as the fifteenth most traded of the contracts tracked by the Depository Trust & Clearing Corp. in the week through Sept. 27. That's up from a rank of 147th for the previous week.
